What do residential service contracts cover?

At Allied Home Warranty, we love to make home ownership easier for you. If we could, we’d help you with every last detail, but for homeowners, whether customers of Allied or another home warranty company, it is simply not possible for everything to be covered by a service contract.

For example, clients are often upset to find out that residential service contracts do not match brands when replacing appliances, or that after-hours service is covered only up to the cost of service at normal business hours or that secondary damage caused by failed systems is not covered. To help with this, we put together a Cliff’s Notes about what our industry covers (you can download it here). We also put together a list of some of the common items we cover and the estimated savings you get from your warranty with Allied (you can view it here).

Importantly, the EPA passed regulations in 2003 to require air conditioning manufacturers to convert to a new refrigerant called 410a (“puron”). They can no longer manufacture air conditioning equipment that utilizes R22 (“freon”) refrigerant starting in 2010. Standard service contracts may cover the cost of new covered 410a equipment replacing the covered failed unit, but they do not cover the significant upgrade, modifications and code requirements that this equipment conversion will require. Click here to view the EPA site explaining the refrigerant conversion.

We know residential service contracts can be complicated at times, that’s why we created this web page to help you find the resources to better understand your coverage. (Of course, our lawyers wanted us to say that your service contract has all of the details, which can be found in your online account).

Ultimately, if you don’t understand what our industry covers, you’ll never know how good Allied is! (Ok, that was a little self-serving…). But, if you do have questions, don’t hesitate to call us at  866-791-1200 .
